Causes, Symptoms and Prevention of Allergic Reactions to Sun Lotion
Allergy-prone skin can overreact to sun lotions, even those labelled 'hypo-allergenic' or 'for sensitive skin'. Natural sunscreens without chemicals are the best bet for preventing a negative reaction.
Irritant and Allergic Dermatitis
According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, when skin reacts to an external substance like the chemicals in a sunscreen, it could be due to either irritant contact dermatitis, or allergic contact dermatitis.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between the two, but usually the irritant type occurs within minutes of contact with the substance, while the allergic type can occur 24-48 hours afterwards, while the immune system reacts.
People who suffer from eczema are especially prone to developing skin irritation in response to sunscreens, and should take extra care when choosing a sun protection product.
Signs and Symptoms of A Skin Allergic Reaction
The following symptoms can occur after using a sun lotion containing chemicals:
- Inflammation
- Redness
- Hives
- Blisters
- Scaling (in more severe cases)
Common Allergy Triggers in Sun Protection Creams
According to Cancer Research UK, sunscreens are made up of one or both of the following:
- Chemical absorbers. These penetrate the skin and absorb sunlight, and are more likely to cause irritation.
- Physical reflectors. These sit on the top layer of skin and reflect sunlight. They are less likely to irritate the skin.
The following are ingredients commonly found in sun lotion, which can be associated with allergic skin reactions:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS),
- Sodium Laureth Sulphate(SLES)

- GMO's (Genetically Modifie Organisms)
- DEA (Diethanolamine)
- TEA (Triethanolamine)
- emulsifiers
- synthetic colours
- perfume
- lanolin
- petrochemicals
- propylene glycol
- polyethylene glycol (PEG)
- Methyldibromoglutaronitrile. According to Cancer Research UK,this chemical has caused an increase in allergic reactions in recent years, e.g. swelling, itching and acute dermatitis.
Brands of Sun Lotion Suitable for Allergic Skin
These brands of sunscreen are much less likely to cause an allergic reaction. However, it is best to always test a small amount of sunscreen on a patch of skin before applying it to the entire body. Wait 24 hours for a reaction, and if none occurs, it is probably safe to go ahead.
