Manage Pet Allergies While Keeping Your Pet

Allergy Symptoms from Pets May Be Manageable

Aug 12, 2009 Jennifer Marsh

Giving up a pet is not an option for most dog and cat lovers. Dealing with pet allergies is the only way some people can keep their furry friend.

Some pet owners are unaware of pet allergies until they show symptoms. After seeing a physician or allergist, the pet owner is informed of the requirement to remove the pet from the home. Pet owners are a breed of their own. Asking to get rid of a pet is like asking to get rid of a child. Many pet owners opt for management of pet allergies rather than dump the dog or cat off to a new owner. If pet allergies are a discomfort, they can be controlled. Some medications may be a requirement, but many of the pet allergy options are lifestyle changes.

Control Pet Allergies with Room Control

Lying down and trying to sleep is when pet allergies become the most prominent. Keeping pets out of the bedroom helps control outbreaks. Pet allergies are exacerbated at night when the body is horizontal and the lungs are compressed. Coughing, wheezing, and breathing problems occur at night, making it difficult to breathe and sleep. Reducing the amount of exposure of pets in the bedroom greatly reduces the side effects of pet allergies. Pet owners can simply keep the bedroom door shut to reduce symptoms.

Hot Water Destroys Pet Allergies

Hot water should be used whenever the pet owner washes sheets, pillow cases, and other fabric. The heat destroys the proteins and dust particles that cause symptoms. Tiny mites that feed off of old skin cells are also destroyed by washing fabric with hot water. These tiny bugs and dust particles enter the respiratory system and cause airways to inflame.

Vacuum Often Using a Pet Allergy Mask

Vacuuming often removes pet dander and allergens from the carpet. It also allows some side dust particles to kick up into the air. These particles are breathed in and cause inflammation in lung tissue, causing breathing problems. Many vacuums now come with Hepa filters, but wearing a mask also helps eliminate the amount of allergens that enter the lungs. Masks are purchased at a local hardware store.

Use Nasal Sprays to Suppress Pet Allergies

While cleaning or petting animals, use nasal sprays such as NasalCrom. These pet allergies medications suppress the body’s inflammation and response to dander. It also helps reduce the amount of pet allergies when using sprays like NasalCrom in the morning before exposing the body to allergens. NasalCrom has better results after several weeks of usage.

If pet allergies affect a patient’s ability to live comfortably, managing the allergens is the only way to keep the pet while not making the owner suffer. Keep dust and dander to a minimum, and the pet owner can live with the pet even if it causes allergy symptoms.
