Dealing with severe allergies can be a time-consuming process. However, knowing what to do during an allergy attack is extremely important.

Allergies can present in various forms. There are very serious allergies, and then there are very mild forms of allergies that do not require extreme medical attention. However, administering first aid and addressing the issues at hand in a proper manner can prove to be a lifesaving technique.

Allergies can occur due to a variety of reasons, and they can impact a person’s health in a very severe manner, without giving any prior indication or warnings.

The Nature of Allergies

Allergies can come about via insect bites, allergic material in consumer foods, dust in the air, or liquids that a person consumes on a daily basis. Most allergic reactions don’t prove to be fatal, but a small percent of them can drastically change a person’s life. Breathing problems can occur, and anaphylaxis can prevent a person from breathing properly.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis include hives, extreme swelling of the upper and lower lips, and pigmentation (discoloration) of the upper and lower eyelids. Swelling can also occur in the throat and oral cavity. The allergic reactions can also trigger abdominal cramping, vomiting, dizziness, nausea, and mental disorientation.

What to Do as an Allergy Patient

People who know they have severe allergy symptoms often carry anti-histamines and injectable medications with them wherever they go. Over-the-counter anti-histamines also work to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with Benadryl. Epinephrine works very rapidly, and the effects of this drug can also last a very long time.

However, this is only a temporary fix to a long-term problem. In case of an allergy attack, the person should inject himself with the epinephrine and call 911 in order to make sure that everything is okay. Severe anaphylaxis can require a person to be rushed to the emergency room, where family members can watch the patient, and treatment can be subsequently administered by medical professionals.

In fact, it can be very difficult to try and predict how problematic the allergic reaction will be. If anyone exhibits the symptoms of an allergic reaction, they should be taken to the hospital right away. The medical professionals will arrive quickly and transport the person to the emergency room and observe them with a close eye.

An allergy victim should also try their best to keep warm to help their immune system fight off any harmful bacteria that may attack them while in the hospital. These steps can prove to be very useful if utilized properly. It is very important that an allergy patient takes charge of himself and makes himself aware of the risks associated with allergies.
